Countdown to the future
Countdown to the Future« was a follow-up project of »The Future of Labor« from summer term 2016 at KISD. In the project TÜV Rheinland asked us KISD students to present ideas and concepts for an exhabition at ›Night of Technology‹ in 2017, a trade fair, where different companies around Cologne provide the citizens with an insight into new technologies.
In the first step, 21 students from 14 nations initially addressed the question "How will the working worlds of the future change and what influence will the digital transformation have on people, work, lifestyles and the way we communicate with each other?"
The implementation of our video installation was then continued in the second step with a smaller project team consisting of myself, Johanna Rohrer (Germany) as well as Angélica Viviana Padilla Camargo (Colombia), Kaon Kim (South Korea), Ashley Morgan (USA).Extent of the projects: 10 months, part-time
Applied Expertise: PM | Service Design | User Research | Crafts
Outcome: Video installation + interactive exhabition
Objective
Digital Transformation and its influence of work, communication and life style.
How will the working worlds of the future change and what influence will the digital transformation have on people, life and the way we communicate with each other?

Approach
Look at the topic of "The Future of life and work" from different perspectives and make it tangible for society.
"Countdown to the Future" included multiple design processes. Starting from concept development and research, it was our students' job to conduct interviews, create the story and script, visual identity, video production, and the final exhibition stands at the trade fair. We experimented with numerous narratives, visuals, installation mock-ups throughout 10 months. Last but not least, worked on the communication among the KISD team, TÜV Rheinland, and interview partners.
For the film, 14 individual interviews were conducted with personalities from the media, art, sports, business and science. The interviewees provide insights into how their work has already changed as a result of the digital transformation and venture a glimpse of where the work of the future may be headed.
During the "Night of Technology," people from the Bonn, Rhein Sieg district were able to visit our exhibition at the TÜV Rheinland site.Selection of work insights
Methods and techniques

Research
In addition to the facts, it was important to us to give a very personal touch and insights into the topic of digitization. So we visited trade fairs and events and conducted many interviews with personalities from media, art, sports, business and science.

Interviews
We were supported by TÜV Rheinland in the request for interview partners. We sent over the questionnaire before each appointment and asked for an extra room that we could prepare for the shoot. Thus, most of the shoots could be completed in less than 1 1/2 hours.

Storyboard
First, we had to sift through the many answers of the interviews, form categories and create a storyline from them. Quotes helped us to build the story.

Installation mock-ups
For planning costs and room design, it was important to know the building blocks of the installation. For this purpose, the design concepts were visualized. TÜV Rheinland gave us a great deal of freedom here.

Crafts
Each installation module was brought from idea to reality by us with a lot of love. For this we used the workshops of the KISD (Cologne international School of Design).
Exhabition
Video installation
The 14 minute long main film was produced to fit on 3 screens that were horizontally bound together in 35 degrees angle. This created an immersive effect for the audience and also some space for footage and infographic animations that helped non-experts better understand the complex contents. Apart from the main film, there were 3 exhibition stands equipped with tablets and headphones, where the visitors could watch individual interviews from the experts. They were also invited to express their own reflection with markers and a writable surface on each stand.

Learnings
International insights
Working in an international team stimulates creativity a lot. Sources are even more widely accessible and a wide variety of experiences are brought in. Even if the communication needs a little more sensitivity or simply time at one point or another.
Strong partners help
Even though sometimes you might want to do it alone, a known, broadly positioned partner helps to be able to pull the right strings quickly.
